HBO Takes On Netflix In The Nordics, With Its Own Streaming Video ...

HBO is going to launch its first significant over-the-top offering, and it?s going to do so in one of the same markets as Netflix. The service, called HBO Nordic, will be launched in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland in mid-October, and could provide some interesting competition to Netflix, which will also soon be entering that region.

HBO Nordic is a joint venture between Home Box Office and Parsifal International, which will help bring the company?s original programming to the region. Viewers in the Nordic states will have multiple ways of getting HBO Nordic: it will launch a premium, 24-hour live channel that will be distributed through local TV providers. But HBO Nordic will also be available direct to consumers as an on-demand, over-the-top video offering that will cost less than ?10 per month.

The content offering will be similar to its online HBO GO service in the U.S., which makes all HBO original programming available online. That will include its current slate of shows, such as Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, and True Blood, as well as older series such as The Wire and Sex and the City. In addition, it will have other content available, including series premiering in the Nordics such as Magic City, Hit and Miss, Continuum, and Borgia. It will also include major feature films from Hollywood and international studios, local distributors, and independents.

The offering will be HBO?s first major over-the-top offering, but it will also be put it in direct competition with Netflix for the first time. Netflix announced a few weeks ago that it would be launching in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland by the end of the year. While the two video providers both have content available in many of the same markets, they haven?t yet competed with the same business model.

Netflix operates a streaming-only video service that it sells direct to consumers, but this is HBO?s first major attempt at making its content available to all viewers online. In the U.S., HBO GO is only available to those who subscribe to its premium content network. And in many other international markets, HBO licenses its content to local distributors. So it will be an interesting experiment for the network.

This is probably an awesome time to mention that HBO?s SVP of Digital Products Alison Moore will be at TechCrunch Disrupt in a few weeks. Reddit users were at first astounded that the president of the United States had landed in their midst. After site administrators confirmed that the person with the username ?President Obama? was in fact POTUS, all heck broke loose.

Questions poured forth, from serious inquiries about how to handle college debt in a down economy, to the identity of Mr. Obama?s favorite toothpaste and his attitude towards (the late rock star) Freddy Mercury and (current actor) Neil Patrick Harris.

Users get to pick their questions in AMA, so the silly stuff went unanswered. Among other things, Obama told Reddit that his toughest decision as president had been the approval of the surge of troops into Afghanistan.

?The decision did help us blunt the Taliban?s momentum, and is allowing us to transition to Afghan lead.... But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget,? wrote Obama.

Answering a query about the dangers of money in politics, Obama opined that the flood of cash from "super political-action committees" threatens to drown out the voices of ?ordinary citizens.? He said that over the longer term the US might need to mobilize a ?constitutional amendment process? to overturn the Supreme Court?s Citizens United decision.

He came out in favor of space exploration and Internet freedom without explaining exactly what he meant in either case, noted that Michael Jordan is his favorite basketball player, and, in breaking news, said that the recipe used for White House-brewed beer will soon be released.

He closed by answering a question about life balance, saying that it?s hard when you have presidential responsibilities, but at least his commute is short.

?By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience ? NOT BAD!? he concluded.

Why did Obama take the time to answer a few general questions in this manner? Gee, you don?t think it had anything to do with counterprogramming the GOP convention, do you?

The Reddit session will allow Obama to break through the coverage of the GOP in a crucial segment of voters ? young, electronically-connected ? in which Democrats need to do well in the fall.

Plus, of course he enjoyed the Reddit question experience. Would you rather answer questions shouted at you by the White House press corps in a mass session, or pick what you want to answer in a quiet room and then peck away on a laptop?

The whole thing is another example of how the Obama administration in particular, and politicians in general, are increasingly bypassing the established channels of the mainstream media to find new and less-filtered ways of getting out their message.

It?s no accident that Obama this week also gave an interview to Glamour Magazine. First Lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on David Letterman?s show tonight. The MSM doesn?t like it. But in the new wired world the old rules are changing, and establishment Washington reporters don?t have the leverage they once did.

Lack of Communication

Hello. I have turned to the internet to find some answers. My wife and I have only been married for 2 month but lived together for 2 1/2 years before we were married. I am an artist and have little background in psychology. I have always been interested with the human mind. I went through severe depression and learned then the importance of communication.

My wife is very mathematically minded. You can ask her how she feels about something and she says I dont know. You can ask her to describe how she feels and she can't. It's almost like there is thoughts at all in her mind. I struggle with this because my mind is always going. You tell me something and I think of every possible situation and outcome. I think about the conversation I might have with someone and what they would say and what I would say back. I think about all the bad that might happen and how to solve it. I describe in detail how something makes me feel and discuss my views.

I love my wife but I know communication is the #1 thing in a relationship. I fear if we can't communicate than we will grow apart. I fear if we have children she won't be able to talk with them and problem solve with me.

I want to find a way to help her think more deeply and to be able to express feelings and to problem solve. I want to ask her what do you think and she can say exactly what she feels instead of throw her hands up and say I dont know!

On a side note we rarely have sex. It has gotten better but I just feel at this point in our relationship it should be at least a majority of the week. Now don't take me for just wanting sex. I feel like sex or rather making love to my wife is "Love." For me and the love i feel for her is so deep and powerful only tears can touch the emotion. Making love is the best physical expression of this power or emotion inside of me. This emotional release we share with each other as one. The problem is she has a thyroid problem. So she has a low sex drive. I feel like she doesn't care to even try to over come it. Because we don't talk about it until I get upset. This is also due to the lack of communication.

I come to you on this forum for help and advice. I want any books that might help her to learn to communicate and share. As well as anything that might help with increasing sex drive naturally.

Why Evangelicals Are Supporting Romney

Does evangelical support for Mitt Romney require them evangelicals elevate political partisanship over theological integrity? ?Does this show that evangelicals are willing to compromise their core theological beliefs in service to their political agenda?

I don?t think so ? but some have suggested it does. ?As the Republican national convention is underway, it?s worth revisiting this issue:

Jonathan Merritt wrote back in early June:

What?s surprising in 2012 is the relative lack of anxiety on the other [non-Mormon] side, among evangelicals who for years considered Mormonism a ?cult? that was to be feared, not embraced.

In fact, the relative ambivalence among prominent evangelicals about this new ?Mormon moment? ? and the fact that Romney?s campaign could mainstream Mormonism right into the Oval Office ? could radically shift the dynamics on America?s political and religious landscape.

My friend and Patheos blogger Scot McKnight?said that Merritt ?nails it.? ?He goes on: ?the evangelical voice has grown strangely silent on Romney?s Mormon faith, and it is for one reason: politics too often matters more.?

I disagree. ?Conservative evangelicals (progressive evangelicals are another matter, of course) are supporting Romney because they?re showing a measure of political maturity.

First of all, evangelicals like myself who supported Romney throughout the primary know that other evangelicals were hardly holding their fire when it comes to Mitt?s Mormonism. ?I can?t tell you how many emails and messages I received informing me that Mormonism is a cult and that supporting Romney for the GOP candidacy was doing the devil?s work. ?Robert Jeffress is commonly cited as the voice of the evangelical extreme on this issue,?but while I stringently disagreed with labeling Mormonism a ?cult,? what Jeffress articulated at the Values Voters Summit in 2011 was a reasonable position: Given two equally qualified conservatives candidates, one Mormon and the other evangelical, he would prefer an evangelical. ?But Jeffress made clear even then that, were Romney to win the nomination, he would have Jeffress? full support over against Barack Obama.

Let?s not forget that some Christian conservatives were so concerned by what looked like the increasingly likely prospect of a Romney presidency that they rallied in a Texas conclave in order to come to a consensus on an alternative to support. ?While Romney?s representatives were invited, the conclave was a microcosm of the primary, where social conservatives lurched from one bad candidate to another, in search of a Not-Mitt to support.

Once he won the primary, however, was it hypocritical of conservative evangelicals then to support Romney? ?Are they showing that they care more about the election of a conservative than the salvation of souls?

Of course not. ?There?s no compelling reason to believe that Mitt?s election would lead more people to convert to Mormonism. ?George W. Bush did not make Methodism more popular, and Barack Obama has not made the United Church of Christ more popular. ?There?s no evidence that John F. Kennedy swelled the ranks of the Mormon church, and no one seemed terribly concerned that Joseph Lieberman as Vice President would lead more people to become Jewish.

Granted, you might say, but Mormonism is on the fringe in a way that Methodism and Catholicism are/were not. ?This would ?mainstream? Mormonism, and thus would lead more people to take Mormonism seriously as a religious option. ?To which I say: So what? ?Let them learn about Mormonism and make a decision. ?I?m not afraid of people learning more about Mormonism and its distinctives from historic Christianity. ?And if Americans learn that Mormons are by and large ordinary and honorable people, that?s a good thing, in my book. ?Besides, a Mitt Romney presidency is just as likely to turn people off from Mormonism as it is to turn them on.

Perhaps evangelicals are supporting Romney because they understand that they?re voting for a President and not a Pontiff. ?Perhaps they?re supporting Mitt for the Presidency because, you know, they actually think he?d be a better President than Romney. ?Seems perfectly reasonable to me. ?While I would be uncomfortable with a satanist in the White House because I do fear that his fundamental values and beliefs would lead him to make decisions I would regard as morally objectionable, I have no reason to believe that the distinctive Mormon christology would lead Romney to make the wrong executive decisions.

Evangelicals are supporting Romney because they?re grownups. ?Many wanted someone else to win the primary, but evangelicals are not merely mashing their sour grapes. ?They?re supporting the man who is, by a hundred miles, a far better man for the White House than Barack Obama. ?We recognize the importance of evicting Obama from the White House; we understand they we?re not endorsing a theological but electing an executive; and we?re prioritizing issues like protecting the unborn and rebuilding a flourishing economy and culture over having someone in the White House who thinks about the Trinity in the same way we do.

That?s not hypocrisy. ?It?s maturity.

Romney?s speeches at places like Liberty University have made a difference, as Romney has begun to project the kind of full-orbed vision of American renewal, from its moral and cultural roots to its families and communities and businesses and economy, that conservative evangelicals are eager to support. ?Obama?s decisions and statements with regard to the HHS mandate and same-sex marriage have only strengthened evangelical support for Romney as well.

In the last analysis, evangelicals find themselves facing in this election just as they have for two generations this inexorable logic: (a) Abortion is the supreme moral issue of our time. ?(b) The Democratic Party is unequivocally the party of abortion. ?(c) Electing a Democrat (even a pro-life one, which Obama is not) is strengthening the party of abortion and prolonging the abortion regime in America. ?(d) Ergo, the only hope for serious progress on the abortion issue is in electing Republicans.

But it?s not only the abortion issue. ?On many issues, Romney gives conservative evangelicals the best chance for progress. ?When you consider the fact that he is also a man of extraordinary personal integrity, even more remarkable intelligence and competency, and an extremely successful business leader with precisely the kind of economic experience this country needs, there?s no question why conservative evangelicals would support Romney. ?Because they?re not stupid.

The payroll deduction continues indefinitely until the plan holder cancels authorization, Kazmierczak says. If a $25 contribution is set up from biweekly paychecks when a child turns 2, he or she could accumulate $10,400--not counting any earnings by his or her 18th birthday.

Parents who can no longer contribute or need to reduce the amount of the payroll deduction, can contact their payroll department, Kazmierczak says. He notes that it only takes a couple of days to cancel contributions made from a checking account. However, for the payroll deduction, he says, it may take employers one or two payroll cycles to modify the deduction.

Controlling gene expression: How chromatin remodelers block a histone pass

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Two opposing teams battle it out to regulate gene expression on the DNA playing field. One, the activators, keeps DNA open to enzymes that transcribe DNA into RNA. Their repressor opponents antagonize that effort by twisting DNA into an inaccessible coil around histone proteins, an amalgam called chromatin, effectively blocking access to DNA by enzymes that elongate an RNA strand.

Both teams maneuver by chemically modifying histones -- the activators by decorating histones with acetyl groups -- let's call them green flags -- causing them to loosen their grip on DNA. The repressors retaliate by marking histones with red flags, often methyl groups, which call in de-acetylase enzymes to clip off the green flags, restore the chromatin barrier and end that round of gene expression. Disturbing this biochemical balance lies at the heart of many diseases, particularly cancer.

Recently, the lab of Jerry Workman, Ph.D., investigator at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, reported in the journal Nature that a reserve of "pre-acetylated" histones sits on the chromatin sidelines ready to sub for histones whose green flags get clipped by repressors, a tactic aiding the activators called "histone exchange." In a companion study published in the Aug. 26, 2012 Advance Online Publication of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology the Workman lab now shows that a repressor called Set2 in yeast recruits a protein assistant to block the histone exchange. That study reveals a heretofore unknown mechanism to keep gene activation under control and ensure that erroneous transcription does not occur.

"Accurate gene expression is critical for normal cell function, and when this control is lost cells grow abnormally," says Workman. "These two studies identify mechanisms used by cells to regulate gene expression, which is important for our understanding of what goes wrong in diseases marked by unregulated cell growth, like cancer."

The study began when the group, in collaboration with Stowers proteomics experts Michael Washburn, Ph.D., and Laurence Florens, Ph.D., applied mass spectrometry analysis to identify any protein expressed in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae that bound to chromatin in regions patrolled by Set2. Those regions were readily apparent by the presence of Set2's red flag methyl group planted in a specific histone protein interacting with DNA.

"We knew that Set2 added this mark in the middle and downstream parts of genes to recruit de-acetylases," says the study's lead author Michaela Smolle, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher in the Workman lab. "But the proteomic search allowed us to cast a wide net for other proteins associated with that mark -- a bit like fishing."

Among the fish caught was a component of a yeast chromatin "remodeler" known as Isw1, providing circumstantial evidence that the Set2 red flag attracts Isw1 as well as de-acetylases. Additional genomic experiments evaluating the entire genome of a yeast mutant lacking Set2 supported that idea: not only were the red methyl flags missing but the chromatin landscape was devoid of Isw1 as well.

To assess Isw1's biological function the group exploited yet another yeast mutant, this one lacking the ISW1 gene itself. Microarray analysis of global transcription in ISW1 CHD1 mutants showed widely perturbed gene expression marked by aberrant expression of RNA snippets rather than complete transcripts. Biologists view the presence of such "cryptic transcripts" as indicators of cellular stress.

Analysis of acetylation and methylation patterns in chromatin of ISW1 mutants revealed the probable cause: mutants showed ramped up histone exchange activity marked by excessive levels green-flagged pre-acetylated histones along the length of many genes, a condition likely favoring initiation of truncated RNAs.

"Our work shows that the Set2 methylation mark plays two important roles to ensure that RNA transcription starts only at the beginning of the gene and not in the middle," says Workman. "On one hand, it recruits Isw1 to block incoming histones, and on the other it also recruits a deacetylase to remove any acetylation marks that might happen to have sneaked in."

The Workman lab uses yeast, fruit flies and mammalian cells to study multiple factors that activate and repress transcription. Thus far, they have characterized players in the repressive Set2 pathway primarily in yeast, in part because yeast represents an ideal organism for mutational analysis and has a fairly small genome -- 6,000 genes compared to the 25,000 or so in humans or mice.

Smolle notes that although yeast genomes are simpler, the principles that govern Set2 activity in yeast will likely hold true for its human counterparts, among them the human protein SETD2. "Yeast has a single methylase, while humans have several, and flies and humans have several Isw1-like proteins," she says. "While you cannot equate one with the other precisely, you can be reasonably sure that what happens in yeast happens in humans as well but tends to be more complicated."

Workman agrees, adding that these discoveries have significant implications for human disease. "Strikingly, the human homolog of Set2, SETD2, is implicated as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer and in renal carcinoma, and those cells are deficient in the SETD2 methylation mark," he says. "These findings strongly suggest that SETD2 could be important in controlling cell growth and preventing tumors. Thanks to yeast, we now know more about how Set2 does that."

In addition to Florens and Washburn, other contributors to the study include Swami Venkatesh, Ph.D., Hua Li, Ph.D., Ying Zhang, Ph.D., and Madelaine M. Gogol, all of the Stowers.

Katherine Jenkins takes to Twitter to deny affair with David Beckham

The Welsh opera star took to Twitter to deny the accusations, branding them ?hurtful and untrue?.

The 32-year-old singer hit back in reaction to internet rumours linking her to the footballer - and Beckham's spokesman said there was not a "jot of truth" in any of the online gossip.

Jenkins wrote on Twitter: "Dear Twitter friends, I've read some horrible rumours on here & want u 2 know I absolutely deny I've had an affair with David Beckham.

"The rumours are very hurtful, untrue & my lawyers tell me actionable."

A spokesman for the singer confirmed her statement.

Jenkins - who split from TV presenter fiance Gethin Jones last year - went on to state that she has only met Beckham twice.

She wrote: "I've only met David twice: once at the Military Awards in 2010 & on a night out in the West End in Feb 2012.

"We were out in a group of friends & it was just a normal fun evening out.

"Just so we are clear I have never been on my own with him and never arranged to meet up."

Beckham's spokesman said: "Unfortunately, we have to deal with this type of nonsense on Twitter. One minute David is dead, then more scurrilous rumours, there is not one jot of truth to any of it."

The 37-year-old footballer has been married to former Spice Girl and designer Victoria since 1999. They have four children together.

GOFFSTOWN ? A candidate for a relatively low-profile law enforcement post made a big splash this week by saying he would be open to using deadly force against doctors performing abortions. Frank Szabo made the comments to WMUR on Wednesday and issued a retraction early Thursday morning. The comments created some buzz on the Internet, popping up on sites like HuffingtonPost.com and Newser.com. ?Well, I would hope that it wouldn?t come to that, as with any situation where someone is in danger, but again, specifically talking about elective abortions and late-term abortions, that is an act that needs to be stopped,? Szabo told the WMUR. In a statement emailed to media outlets on Thursday, he called the comments ?unacceptable,? apologized to voters for ?losing track? of what he was saying. ?Clearly, I feel very strongly about life beginning at conception, and that will not change. But, in making comments yesterday, I let my passionate stance against abortion get the better of me,? he said. ?What I said was inexcusable, and as sheriff, I would not use lethal force against an abortion doctor.? S&P 500 finishes flat on Fed minutes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 erased earlier losses to close flat on Wednesday after minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting indicated the central bank might be ready for another round of stimulus.

Minutes from the July 31-August 1 meeting suggested the Fed is likely to deliver another round of monetary stimulus "fairly soon" unless the economy improves considerably.

The only question for markets is whether the recent improvement in economic data, which came after that meeting, will have convinced Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke that no action is necessary.

"The market is questioning if the improvement we're seeing is substantial enough for Chairman Bernanke. He wants the (recently improving) economic data to translate into private- sector job creation," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, in Newark, New Jersey.

"The initial reaction from the markets is that it is sooner rather than later that the Fed will come in."

Stocks had spent most of the session in negative territory after weak export data from Japan and caution over Greece's meetings this week with European Union officials gave investors reasons to pull back after the recent rally.

Among the most actively traded U.S. stocks on Wednesday was Dell Inc, down 5.4 percent at $11.68 a day after the No. 2 U.S. PC maker warned of a challenging second half and slashed its full-year earnings outlook. The NYSEArca computer hardware index lost 1 percent.

Following on the heels of Dell's results, Hewlett-Packard Co slipped 1.1 percent to $18.99 after the close as the world's largest PC maker posted a third-quarter loss.

On Tuesday, the S&P 500 hit its highest level in more than four years, but failed to hold that peak, and the index closed in the red. However, the S&P's steady move higher has lifted short-term support to the 1,400 level, although the index may need a positive catalyst to extend the rally.

The Jackson Hole, Wyoming, meeting of central bankers and economists at the end of the month is seen as possibly the next big market catalyst, followed by the European Central Bank's September 6 meeting and the German constitutional court's vote to ratify the euro zone's rescue fund six days later.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 30.82 points, or 0.23 percent, to 13,172.76. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 0.32 of a point, or 0.02 percent, to 1,413.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 6.41 points, or 0.21 percent, to 3,073.67.

Japan's exports slumped the most in six months in July as shipments to Europe and China tumbled, adding to concerns about global demand after a string of dire trade figures from Asia's export engines.

Uncertainty lingered over the effectiveness of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' attempts to convince other European officials that his country should be given more time to meet targets for deficit cuts.

Toll Brothers Inc shares rose to $33.68, their highest since February 2007, after the largest U.S. luxury homebuilder reported a higher quarterly profit and a sharp jump in new orders. At the close, the stock was up 3.8 percent at $33.01. The PHLX housing sector index advanced 2 percent.

Continuing a string of bullish housing sector data, U.S. home resales rose in July as low interest rates and a modest improvement in the labor market helped home buying conditions.

Shares of Sunrise Senior Living surged 59.7 percent to $14.26 after Health Care REIT Inc said it would acquire the company for $14.50 per share. Health Care shares slid 2.7 percent to $58.14.

Volume was light with about 5.45 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, below the daily average of 6.62 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 3 to 2, while on the Nasdaq, five stocks fell for every three that rose.
