Writer: Johnny Manziel 'has made things interesting' but Collin Klein ...

Ever since Geno Smith?s downfall, Collin Klein has enjoyed a comfortable run as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Johnny Manziel?s performance against Alabama last weekend didn?t end that run but it firmly asserted the redshirt freshman quarterback from Kerrville into the Heisman discussion.

But the Wichita Star?s Kellis Robinett still believes that the 25-pound bronze stiff-armed statue is Klein?s to lose.

?Mazniel has made things interesting, but Klein is still the favorite. As long as K-State stays No. 1 in the BCS standings, that is unlikely to cahnge,? Robinett wrote. ?While it?s true Manziel?s stats (2,780 yards and 18 touchdowns, 1,014 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns) are superior to Klein?s (2,020 yards and 12 touchdowns, 748 yards and 19 touchdowns) there isn?t a big enough difference there to make up for the fact that K-State is undefeated and Texas A&M has two losses.?

Technically speaking, the Heisman Trophy is not an MVP award, but one that is meant to go to the nation?s ?most outstanding player.? But the honor can often fall by default to the best player on the best team, which, at the moment, is Klein. Meanwhile, Manziel has gained 3,794 total yards ? second-most in the country ? in his first 10 career college contests. While some would argue that Manziel is putting up better numbers against tougher defenses in the SEC, Klein remains the frontrunner to win the Heisman.

?Players with tremendous stats get attention regardless of their team. Players on tremendous teams get attention regardless of their stats. But those who put up good stats on an undefeated [team] get the most attention,? Robinett continued. ?Cam Newton played for a team that went undefeated and won a national title. Combined with his stats, practically everyone voted for him. Tim Tebow won the Heisman in a year when the national champion had two losses. Florida didn?t need to win all its game to keephim relevant. Manziel faces a different challenge. His team has two losses. Klein?s has zero. That?s a lot to overcome. A freshman has also never won the Heisman. Unless he is a slam-dunk choice, it will be hard for some traditional voters to break the trend.?

Klein?s Wildcats face Baylor this weekend while Manziel?s Aggies take on Sam Houston State on Saturday.
