George P. Mitchell donated $20 million to Texas A&M University this week, making him the university's all-time most generous donor.
Mitchell has given more than $95 million to the university since 2002, when he gave an initial $1 million to help transform Texas A&M into a world leader in physics and astronomy. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1940 with a distinguished degree in petroleum engineering.
The gift, from Mitchell and his foundation, is established through the Texas A&M Foundation and will bolster the endowment for the George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy, Texas A&M said in a statement.
"My grandfather has a long history of supporting his keen interest in physics and astronomy," said Katherine Lorenz, president of the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, in a statement. ?We are thrilled to support the work of some of the top scientists in the world as they explore the universe's most complex questions."
Mitchell pioneered natural gas shale drilling and founded Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., which was later acquired by Oklahoma-based Devon Energy Corp (NYSE: DVN). He signed The Giving Pledge last year, committing that the majority of his wealth would be donated to charity.
