No one will ever accuse Britney Spears or will.i.am of being lyrical geniuses, but as their new single went to?No. 1 on iTunes this week and the video for "Scream & Shout"?goes viral, we had to ask: Is this really all fans want from their pop stars?

The nearly 5-minute dance track plays like a forgotten sample from a Black Eyed Peas song, with Britney doing the Fergie talkie parts in what some are hearing as a pseudo-British accent. That's British, as in England. Not Britnish, as in Louisiana.

The whole thing comes off so?visually lazy.?More than 3 million people have watched Britney stand still, lie down and half-heartedly vogue. For his part, will.i.am puts his hands to his mouth. Oh! He's shouting. The 853 million people who have made "Gangnam Style" the most watched YouTube video ever are shouting, too. Because it's fun to watch!

It's 2012, so we gave up the why-does-everything-have-to-be-AutoTuned fight years ago. And we're still young enough to know about da club and the music played there, even if we can't stay awake long enough to go dance. But Britney and will are saying NOTHING, and this "Get off my lawn!" rant is for all those who still prefer a song that says SOMETHING.

The princess of pop -- who turns 31 on Sunday -- has had six No. 1 albums over her career. She ranks seventh on Forbes' list of 2012's highest-paid musicians -- $58 million in record sales, touring, endorsements and more. In the '90s, songs like "... Baby One More Time" and "Oops! ... I Did It Again" may not have said anything earth-shattering on their way to No. 1, but compared to "Scream & Shout" ...

But we're such a long way from choreography that brought us the pigtailed schoolgirl?here, or the Martian in red leather over here. Why does Britney make dance music if she doesn't even dance anymore?

In a time when 13-year-old Rebecca Black gets a major Internet beat-down for singing about a day of the week, international superstars will.i.am and Britney Spears are screaming and shouting about much less.

The Angelina model by Richmond Homes in Castle Rock ranges in size from 2,100 square feet to 3,100 square feet and is priced from the mid-$300,000s.

Builders from Boulder to Castle Rock pulled 4,581 permits for new homes in the first 10 months of the year, almost a 55 percent jump from same period in 2011, according to a report released today.

The report by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver, also showed that builders pulled 446 permits for single-family, detached homes in October, a 70.2 percent increase from the 262 in October 2011.

October marked the 18th consecutive month that home sales activity increased from the same month a year earlier, said Jeff Whiton, CEO and executive director of the association.

In the first 10 months of last year, builders pulled 2,960 permits in the counties of Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson and all of the municipalities in the counties. Permit activity indicates future construction.

?There is not much inventory available on either the resale or the new-home side,? Whiton said. ?In that respect, builders are simply responding to market conditions. Nobody has to worry about over-building and I don?t see much potential for price discounting going on. If anything, we are going to start seeing increases in new home prices.?

Indeed, builders may try to pass on increasing construction costs, some of it caused by hurricane Sandy.

?Those type of increases typically follow big natural disasters,? Whiton said. ?We experienced that after Katrina. Hopefully, it will not last too long and will not cause a huge spike in prices.?

The theory is that construction materials will be flowing to the East Coast where Sandy ravaged buildings and homes, causing potential shortages and driving up prices elsewhere.

?That is the way many people view it,? Whiton said. ?Of course, we are a long way from New Jersey and New York.?

The cost of material and labor also are rising because of increased demand, Whiton said.

The report also showed that Richmond American Homes of Colorado and Century Communities continue to be the two top builders in the metro area, having pulled 902 and 532 permits, respectively, in the first 10 months of the year. Richmond is part of Denver-based M.D.C. Holdings Inc., one of the nation?s largest home builders.

With Higher Taxes Looming, Bonuses May Come Early - NYTimes ...

Some highly paid workers may be getting an extra Christmas present this year: an early bonus.

Firms in bonus-heavy industries like finance, law and consulting typically pay their annual bonuses after Jan. 1, once the firm?s (and employee?s) previous calendar-year performance can be fully assessed. But now, anticipating higher income tax rates in 2013, some companies have decided to distribute their bonuses by Dec. 31 instead.

At Ares Management, a financial services firm, employees have been told they will receive bonuses in mid-December instead of mid-January. A spokesman for the company declined to comment about its compensation practices.

Paying bonuses early ? not more, not less, just early ? can save high-income employees quite a bit of cash. That is because a series of tax changes scheduled to kick in at the end of the year will cause income received in 2013 to be taxed at higher rates than income received in 2012.

?It?s one of the few things you can do as an employer that?ll make employees happy that doesn?t cost you anything,? said Alan Johnson, managing director of Johnson Associates, a compensation consulting firm.

Mr. Johnson, like other compensation and tax consultants and lawyers interviewed, said he had been receiving a lot of inquiries from firms considering accelerating their bonuses into this year.

?Right after the election, many of our clients started calling saying they were interested in doing this,? said Regina Olshan, a partner in the executive compensation group at the international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. So far only a handful have actually decided to give bonuses early, she said, but others may follow suit if Congress marches toward Dec. 31 without voting to undo planned tax increases.

?I can promise you I?ll have calls on Dec. 20 asking, ?Can I accelerate everything in the next two weeks??? she said.

Smaller, privately held firms ? particularly private equity companies, known for their tax-planning acumen ? seem to be taking the biggest interest.

Publicly held companies often have a bigger administrative and legal burden if they change their bonus calendar, especially since many of them have employees abroad under different countries? tax systems. Public companies also appear to be wary of the appearance of lowering their tax bill, even if the actions are completely legal, particularly if they received taxpayer-funded bailouts during the financial crisis.

?There?s so much contemplated regulation in terms of compensation these days,? said Steven G. Eckhaus, a partner at the law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman. ?You can just imagine the public reaction given the fact that bankers are still doing relatively well relative to everyone else. Most people don?t have the luxury of being able to change when they get their compensation, let alone receive that kind of bonus in the first place.?

One of the risks of paying bonuses early is that companies do not know for certain whether they will hit their annual targets, which for accounting, legal and administrative reasons are often supposed to be tied to the bonuses they pay out.

After all, in the last few weeks of the year, clients may not pay, the market may drop precipitously, or some other calamity may arise, and companies have no easy way of clawing back bonuses they have already given out.

At publicly traded companies, if performance-based bonuses are distributed and the company does not hit its targets, the company itself can face adverse tax consequences.

One solution, said Mr. Johnson, is to pay part of the annual bonus before Dec. 31, and then wait to pay the rest of it until after the new year, when the company has had a chance to go over the complete books more thoroughly.

Paying bonuses early can certainly impose administrative headaches.

Even though, for accounting reasons, companies usually know by December roughly how much money they?re going to pay out over all, they usually have not yet determined how that bonus pool will be distributed. At bigger firms, the process for allocating bonuses takes about six weeks, according to James F. Reda, managing director at James F. Reda & Associates, a division of Gallagher Benefit Services.

Usually, accountants and tax lawyers advise their clients to defer as much compensation as possible until after the new year.

That?s partly because there is a chance that their income will fall into a lower tax bracket the following year. Additionally, receiving income on Jan. 1 rather than Dec. 31 also means that they can hold on to their money longer before having to hand over some of it as taxes to the government. Income received on Dec. 31, 2012, is taxed by April 15, 2013; taxes on money received on Jan. 1, 2013, may not be payable in full until April 15, 2014. The taxpayer can use that extra year to invest the money and earn a return on it.

Accountants? and lawyers? advice is different this year because tax rates are expected to rise on Jan. 1, particularly for those with higher incomes.

If tax rates for high earners return to their Clinton-era rates, as President Obama wants, the top marginal income tax rate would rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. That may not sound like a big jump, but when you?re talking about large sums of money, the increase can be substantial.

A $1 million bonus taxed at the top marginal rate, for example, would incur an additional $46,000 in taxes ($396,000, instead of $350,000).

And that calculation factors in just one of the tax rates scheduled to rise at the end of the year. Earners in the top brackets are likely be hit with other tax increases in 2013, including the expiration of the payroll tax cut and a new Medicare surtax created by the Affordable Care Act.

Clients have been calling their tax and compensation lawyers about accelerating other forms of income, too. Ms. Olshan said she received a call from a client who expected to be fired next year and wanted to know about requesting severance early.

Compensation lawyers and consultants noted that companies have received ?false alarms? about Washington?s plans to raise taxes in the past, so companies may be dragging their feet about speeding up the bonus cycle this year.

?This is about the fourth time we?ve gone through this tax scare, where people say there?s some catastrophic tax thing coming,? Mr. Johnson said. As a result, he thinks most firms will not revise their bonus calendars. ?Some may regret it deeply in a few months, but I think most won?t get around to it.?

Undescended Testes Linked to Increase Testicular Cancer Risk

Boys whose testes have not descended into the scrotum at birth may be nearly three times more likely to develop testicular cancer later in life, according to a new study.

An increased risk of testicular cancer has long been linked with undescended testes (a condition properly called cryptorchidism), and previous studies have shown that 5 to 10 percent of testicular cancer patients were born with undescended testes, according to the study.

However, it has remained unclear exactly how much a boy's risk of testicular cancer is increased if he was born with undescended testes, a question the new study aimed to answer. The researchers reviewed 12 previous studies, conducted between 1980 and 2007, including more than 2 million men.

They found that boys with undescended testes were 2.9 times more likely to develop testicular cancer.

"Our study provides a comprehensive, generalisable estimate of the true risk of a boy with isolated cryptorchidism developing a subsequent testicular malignancy," the researchers wrote in their findings.

Now, researchers must consider whether this degree of increased cancer risk means that boys born with the condition should undergo heightened surveillance for testicular cancer, according to the study.

About 6 percent of newborn boys are born with undescended testes, according to the study. While a fetus remains in utero, the testes form and develop within the abdominal cavity. Normally, they move into the scrotum before birth, but in boys with the condition, the testes remain in the abdomen.

The reason for the link between the condition and cancer is not clear. Studies have suggested that the temperature elevation experienced by the testes while they are in the abdominal cavity somehow promotes cancer. It could also be that an underlying hormonal condition predisposes some boys to both cryptorchidism and testicular cancer.

Future studies should continue to look at the link, and should examine how men's risk of cancer is affected by factors such as whether one or both testicles remained undescended at birth, the degree to which the testicles have descended, and whether the condition was corrected with surgery.

The study is published today (Nov. 28) in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Human disturbances keep elk on high alert

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? University of Alberta researchers discovered that elk are more frequently and more easily disturbed by humans such as ATV drivers than by their natural predators like bears and wolves.

The U of A researchers, led by biologist Simone Ciuti, spent 12 months in southwestern Alberta. The study involved elk herds made up of females and their offspring. The researchers observed the animals' reactions to different rates of human disturbances in the form of traffic on nearby roads and off-road, all-terrain vehicles.

The elk in the study were found on a variety of land types -- public, private and inside Waterton National Park.

The research data showed that starting with a rate of just one vehicle passing by an elk herd every two hours, the animals became disturbed and more vigilant. In this state the elk consume less food, which can affect their health and possibly their calving success.

The researchers found that the highest level of disturbance happened on public lands where the effect of hunting and ATV use was cumulative.

Contrary to what some people might expect, elk inside Waterton National Park during the busy summer tourist season displayed less disturbance reaction than elk in more remote, unpopulated public land settings where motorized recreational activities were permitted.

Ciuti says this shows that the animals' reactions are not shaped by numbers of people but by the type of human activity they're exposed to.

Observing the elk from long distances so as not to alter their behaviour, the researchers took detailed notes documenting the frequency and amount of time the elk spent scanning the horizon for danger rather than foraging for food.

Ciuti says the U of A gave him an invaluable experience as a field biologist.

"Observing elk, especially in December, can be physically demanding, but you see things you can't even imagine, like a grizzly bear chasing an elk herd, trying to single out a calf," he said. "The U of A is the right place to be if you want to study animal ecology."

This research was supervised by U of A biology professor Mark Boyce. Followup research comparing birth rates in North American ungulates with levels of human disturbance will be conducted by researchers from the Boyce lab at the U of A.

The research was published Nov. 28 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Not to be confused with the similarly-named cat food, the i.am+ range starts at ?199 in the UK and the Black Eyed Pea?s "fashionable" phone cases will beef up the iPhone?s measly 8MP camera with interchangeable lenses and a more serious flash.

Temple Terrace mayor declares ?Skip Holtz Day?

As USF football coach Skip Holtz prepared for his weekly radio show on 98.7 FM to talk about Saturday?s game against Pittsburgh, he seemed surprised to see Temple Terrace Mayor Frank Chillura and City Council members Grant Rimbey and David Pogorilich in attendance.

Though the football team has gone 3-8 this season ? its worst record in school history ? Chillura declared the day, Nov. 27, as ?Skip Holtz Day? to honor Holtz?s commitment to the Temple Terrace area and or deciding to host his show in the Temple Terrace Beef ?O? Brady?s.

?We appreciate that Skip chose to host his show in our town,? Chillura said. ?Due to our close proximity, we look forward to working more with the USF community in the future.?

Chillura made the announcement minutes before Holtz and co-hosts Jim Louk and Mark Robinson were set to broadcast, saying he wanted to partner more with USF in the future.

Holtz, who moved around to many different locations to host his show, said Beef ?O? Brady?s seemed like the nicest place to do it. He seemed surprised but grateful, to have the day named in his honor.

Though Holtz recognized the season hasn?t been USF?s finest, he said the team needs to continue to move forward and build.

?Everything isn?t always going to go our way,? he said during the show. ?But my favorite memories of this team and its senior class would have to be the way that they handled this adversity.?

In a press release earlier on Tuesday, Chillura encouraged fans and students to watch the show in the ?Bulls? Pen? at Beef ?O? Brady?s. About 50 people, including alumni and students, were in attendance to watch Holtz?s last show of the season, and the Bulls coach and Chillura took time to talk with residents and students.

As the show wound down, a humbled Holtz stood up, thanked the crowd and announced he would pay for everyone?s meals.

It is unclear whether ?Skip Holtz Day? will occur annually.

Court orders new look at health care challenge

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court has revived a Christian college's challenge to President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul, with the acquiescence of the Obama administration.

The court on Monday ordered the federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., to consider the claim by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., that Obama's health care law violates the school's religious freedoms.

A federal district judge rejected Liberty's claims, and the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the lawsuit was premature and never dealt with the substance of the school's arguments. The Supreme Court upheld the health care law in June.

The justices used lawsuits filed by 26 states and the National Federation of Independent Business to uphold the health care law by a 5-4 vote, then rejected all other pending appeals, including Liberty's.

The school made a new filing with the court over the summer to argue that its claims should be fully evaluated in light of the high court decision. The administration said it did not oppose Liberty's request.

Liberty is challenging both the requirement that most individuals obtain health insurance or pay a penalty, and a separate provision requiring many employers to offer health insurance to their workers.

The appeals court could ask the government and the college for new legal briefs to assess the effect of the Supreme Court ruling on Liberty's claims before rendering a decision.

Liberty's case joins dozens of other pending lawsuits over health reform, many involving the requirement that employer insurance plans cover contraception, which are working their way through the federal court system.

The case is Liberty University v. Geithner, 11-438.

NHL Lockout 2012: Regular-Season Games Canceled Through Dec. 14, All-Star Game

-- More than a third of the NHL regular season and two of its marquee events have now been called off.

The league announced its latest round of cancellations on Friday ? Day 69 of its labor lockout. All games through Dec. 14 were wiped out, and this time All-Star Weekend, scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio, was lost, too. The New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic already was scratched.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said losing the All-Star festivities is "extremely disappointing."

"We feel badly for NHL fans and particularly those in Columbus, and we intend to work closely with the Blue Jackets organization to return the NHL All-Star events to Columbus and their fans as quickly as possible," Daly said in a statement Friday.

The Blue Jackets said fans holding tickets to the game, the skills competition, and other events during that weekend could receive refunds.

Brian Jack, a 35-year-old IT director who grew up in Pittsburgh, moved to Columbus 17 years ago and converted from a Penguins fan to a Blue Jackets supporter after the expansion team hit the ice.

"We knew the All-Star Game, the longer it went, was probably going to be one of the first special events they cancelled," said Jack, a season-ticket holder for all of the Blue Jackets' 12 seasons.

"You knew it was coming, but I hoped that they would get together and fix it (labor problems) up. For season-ticket holders who have watched the Blue Jackets struggle for a number of years with the product on the ice, the All-Star game was supposed to be a bright spot. Now that's gone."

A lockout in the 1994-95 season shortened that campaign to 48 games. A similar scenario could play out this time if the sides can find some common ground. Or the whole season could be lost, as it was in 2004-05.

The new cancellations come as little surprise. Owners and players had an unproductive negotiating session on Wednesday that produced no movement to break an impasse over splitting more than $3 billion in revenue and also player contracts.

"All players felt that this week would lead to something," Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "However as of today unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. It's very disappointing."

Daly said he spoke to union officials on Friday, advising them about the cancellations, but at this point no face-to-face talks are scheduled. The possibility exists that Daly will speak to union special counsel Steve Fehr by telephone this weekend, but even that isn't certain.

The sides had stayed apart for eight days before reconvening on Monday night and then again on Wednesday when the union presented a comprehensive proposal the NHL requested. Players' association executive director Donald Fehr said Wednesday that the sides were closer financially than the NHL has claimed. The further cancellations Friday will cause significantly greater losses for the league.

"On Wednesday, the players presented a comprehensive proposal, once again moving in the owners' direction in order to get the game back on the ice," Donald Fehr said in a new statement. "The gap that remains on the core economic issues is $182 million. On Wednesday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said that the league is losing $18-20 million per day during the lockout, therefore two more weeks of cancelled games far exceeds the current economic gap.

"It makes the NHL's announcement of further game cancellations, including the 2013 All-Star Weekend, all the more unnecessary, and disappointing for all hockey fans ? especially those in Columbus. The players remain ready to negotiate but we require a willing negotiating partner."

The union made its offer that was based on a framework the NHL had given, which included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and a $393 million in deferred payments for the players, who earned 57 percent of revenues in the collective bargaining agreement that expired in September. The NHL offered only $211 million to the players in a proposed deal that took into account that a full 82-game schedule would be played this season.

Players previously had proposed they receive a guaranteed amount of income each year.

Management wants a seven-year deal, which the union says is too long because fewer than half the current players will be active by the last season.

I was so happy to be able to go home with my family for a little while. Cory wasn't able to come with me because he had work and school so I took a little bit more time off to spend time with my family. It's crazy that was the last time I will be home before I have the baby, ah! My Mom, Grandma, Whit and Teig picked me up from the airport. I told them that my flight came in early then it really did just so they would be on time and they were still late. I sure do know my family well haha. We did a little shopping while we were up in Salt Lake and by the time we go to Richfield it was around nine or ten and I thought I was going to die of exhaustion.?We were able to do alot of crafts while I was home. I think everytime Cory asked me what I was doing I was crocheting which is funny because I always made fun of my mom for doing it and now I love it. We had the baby shower on Saturday which was so much fun. I loved seeing everyone and they all gave me such nice gifts. I'm so lucky to have such wonderful friends and family in my life. Ive only been away away from my family for two weeks and I already miss them. I cant wait till Feburary to see a few of them again.?

Magnesium oxide: From Earth to super-Earth

The mantles of Earth and other rocky planets are rich in magnesium and oxygen. Due to its simplicity, the mineral magnesium oxide is a good model for studying the nature of planetary interiors. New work from a team led by Carnegie's Stewart McWilliams studied how magnesium oxide behaves under the extreme conditions deep within planets and found evidence that alters our understanding of planetary evolution. It is published November 22 by Science Express.

Magnesium oxide is particularly resistant to changes when under intense pressures and temperatures. Theoretical predictions claim that it has just three unique states with different structures and properties present under planetary conditions: solid under ambient conditions (such as on the Earth's surface), liquid at high temperatures, and another structure of the solid at high pressure. The latter structure has never been observed in nature or in experiments.

McWilliams and his team observed magnesium oxide between pressures of about 3 million times normal atmospheric pressure (0.3 terapascals) to 14 million times atmospheric pressure (1.4 terapascals) and at temperatures reaching as high as 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (50,000 Kelvin), conditions that range from those at the center of our Earth to those of large exo-planet super-Earths. Their observations indicate substantial changes in molecular bonding as the magnesium oxide responds to these various conditions, including a transformation to a new high-pressure solid phase.

In fact, when melting, there are signs that magnesium oxide changes from an electrically insulating material like quartz (meaning that electrons do not flow easily) to a metal similar to iron (meaning that electrons do flow easily through the material).

Drawing from these and other recent observations, the team concluded that while magnesium oxide is solid and non-conductive under conditions found on Earth in the present day, the early Earth's magma ocean might have been able to generate a magnetic field. Likewise, the metallic, liquid phase of magnesium oxide can exist today in the deep mantles of super-Earth planets, as can the newly observed solid phase.

"Our findings blur the line between traditional definitions of mantle and core material and provide a path for understanding how young or hot planets can generate and sustain magnetic fields," McWilliams said.

"This pioneering study takes advantage of new laser techniques to explore the nature of the materials that comprise the wide array of planets being discovered outside of our Solar System," said Russell Hemley, director of Carnegie's Geophysical Laboratory. "These methods allow investigations of the behavior of these materials at pressures and temperatures never before explored experimentally."
