Wild Times in the Restaurant Business (BKW, YUM, KKD, MCD ...

Sometimes the ?Global Community? experiences some very rough patches because of economies and capitalism being so closely ties together; it?s a small world, and U.S. restaurant brands like Burger King Worldwide Inc (NYSE:BKW), Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (NYSE:KKD), and McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) can be viewed by some as ?western outposts? which is true even if all of the employees are local citizens.?

Politics, culture, and religion to the side, a CNN story this morning on YUM, the world?s largest restaurant company with nearly 38,000 KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell restaurants in more than 120 countries said the fast food giant would be temporarily closing all of its KFC in Pakistan due to anti-American protests.?

Other publicly traded companies like Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, McDonald's, and Burger King also have ?exposures? in Pakistan as well as privately held fast food chains like Subway and Hardee?s.

Reportedly Yum! Brands spokesman Christopher Fuller has said, ??"Our KFC restaurants in Pakistan are closing as a precautionary measure." And, ?? They will continually monitor the situation to decide when to re-open." There is no offical statement on the YUM web site.

I think this is a very, very smart move: Wait until things settle down and reduce the risk.

KFC has more than 60 restaurants in 21 Pakistani cities.?

Angry mobs have attacked a KFC restaurant and a Hardee's and a Krispy Kreme in Tripoli, Lebanon. Hardee's Arabia about 200 restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa.

Until cooler heads prevail I think it wise to reduce any risk of employee injury on a store-by-store basis, company-owned or franchisee and the YUM action could inspire the other chains to temporarily close a unit here and there.

YUM is trading up at the time of this writing in the $67.78 range.?

I haven?t, don?t, and do not intend on holding any of the companies mentioned in this article.

My Scrapbook nook blog: Good bye to the Nook!

It is my turn to bid a fond farewell to our online home and community. That is really what it is right, our own little home and scrappy family. Although I have only been on the forum for just over a year, I feel honoured to have known so many great scrappers and make new friends.

Who would have thought that a?kit company could bring so many people together globally!? That is the wonder of My Scrapbook Nook. It must be from the fondness of the so well put together kits... I thought I would share a few of my favorite pages from the kits I was lucky enough to work with during my term this year!

In no particular order:

Just want to say thank you to everyone at the Nook for being so great - keep in touch!

Will miss you all! :)

Arctic sea ice in 'uncharted territory,' say researchers (+video)

As Arctic sea ice melted to the lowest level ever recorded, researchers said they were unprepared for the speed of this facet of climate change. As Arctic ice melts, scientists worry it will add heat and moisture to the globe's climate system.

By Deborah Zabarenko,?Reuters / September 20, 2012

Arctic sea ice, a key indicator of climate change, melted to its lowest level on record this year before beginning its autumnal freeze, researchers at the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center?said on Wednesday.

The extent of ice?probably hit its low point on Sept. 16, when it covered 1.32 million square miles (3.42 million square km) of the Arctic?Ocean, the smallest amount since satellite records began 33 years ago.

Changing weather conditions could further shrink the extent, the center said. A final analysis is expected next month.

The record was broken on Aug. 26, when the ice?shrank below the record set in 2007. After that, it kept melting for three more weeks, bringing the ice?extent - defined by NSIDC as the area covered by at least 15 percent ice?- to nearly half of the 1979-2000 average.

"We are now in uncharted territory,"?Mark Serreze, the center's director, said in a statement. "While we've long known that as the planet warms up, changes would be seen first and be most pronounced in the Arctic, few of us were prepared for how rapidly the changes would actually occur."

The summer?ice isn't just dwindling. It is also thin, relatively fragile seasonal ice?instead of the hardier multi-year ice?that can better withstand bright sunlight.

"The strong late-season decline is indicative of how thin the ice?cover is," said NSIDC's Walt Meier. "Ice has to be quite thin to continue melting away as the sun goes down and fall approaches."

The Arctic?is a potent weather-maker for the temperate zone, and is sometimes dubbed Earth's air conditioner for its cooling effects. However, as ice?wanes and temperatures rise in the far north, the Arctic?could add more heat and moisture to the climate system.

More extreme weather?

"What happens in the Arctic?doesn't stay in the Arctic," said?Dan Lashof, a climate scientist at the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council. "This has a real impact on Americans where they live and work."

Melting Arctic?ice changes the shape and position of the jetstream, allowing tropical air to penetrate further north and Arctic?air to penetrate further south, Lashof said in a telephone interview, leading to more extreme weather.

"That is a truly staggering rate of melting, far beyond what scientists thought would happen a few years ago,"?Bob Ward?of the?London School of Economics?and Political Science said in a statement. "Policy-makers need to wake up to the scale and pace of the impacts from climate change."

Recent climate models suggest the Arctic?could be free of?ice?before 2050. But the observed rate of melting is faster than what is shown in many of the models, according to NSIDC scientist?Julienne Stroeve.

Both the?Northwest Passage?along?Canada's coast and the Northern Sea?Route along?Russia?were open to traffic this summer, and investors gathered in?Alaska?last month to discuss commercial and transportation opportunities for the Arctic.

The environmental group?Greenpeace International?took issue with that approach.

"Rather than dealing with the root causes of climate change, the current response from our leaders is to watch the?ice?melt and then divide up the spoils," the group's executive director,?Kumi Naidoo?said in a statement.

Fine Structure of the Iris Muscle in the Japanese Common Newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, with Special Reference to Innervation : Cell Biology - BioStor

ZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE 5: 337-346 (1988) 1988 Zoological Society of Japan Fine Structure of the Iris Muscle in the Japanese Common Newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, with Special Reference to Innervation MlTSUMASA OKAMOTO Department of Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science, Nagoya University, Nagoya 464, Japan ABSTRACT ? The localization and structure of the iridial muscles and associated nerves of the newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) were examined by electron microscopy with some histochemical studies of catecholamine and acetylcholinesterase. The sphincter muscle, which was composed of pigmented smooth muscle cells, was located circumferentially in the pupillary margin of the iris. Sphincter muscle cells formed occasional close contacts with each other by protruding cellular processes. Numerous gap junctions and desmosomes were observed between anterior and posterior pigment epithelium of the iris, but not between muscle cells. Nerve endings formed varicosities and were composed of agranular vesicles and/or granular vesicles. There was no dilator muscle in this species. Prominent circumferential catecholamine fluorescence was observed in the pupillary margin. Acetyl- cholinesterase positive and negative muscle cells and nerve fibers were found within the sphincter muscle region. INTRODUCTION The iris sphincter and dilator muscles, known to be the iris muscle in the mammalian eye, change the size of the pupil and regulate the quantity of light. Studies on the iris muscles have been a fascinating subject from the standpoint of develop- ment and differentiation of the muscle, because these muscles are unique in that the sphincter muscle is the only vertebrate smooth muscle known to be derived from neuroectoderm [1-4] and the dilator muscle has myoepithelial charac- ters [1, 5-6]. They are innervated by an autonomic nervous system [7-10], which is advantageous, in that we can easily detect the action of nerves through miosis and mydriasis of the eye. In addition to morpholgical studies on the iris muscle [1-6, 11-13], numerous pharmacological and elec- trophysiological reports have been made on this nervous system using various kinds of animals [14- 20]. Studies on the fine structure of the iris muscle besides mammals have also been reported [21-24], Accepted September 24, 1987 Received August 7, 1987 but only a few works have been undertaken on amphibian species [25-27]. On the other hand, it has been well known that the newt has a capacity for regeneration from the mid-dorsal margin of the iris after having extir- pated an intrinsic lens. Numerous investigations at the light and electron microscopic level have been made on the process of lens regeneration (for review, see [28]). However, the iris muscle in the newt has so far received almost no attention in terms of the study of lens regeneration, although the sphincter muscle at the pupillary margin would appear to be closely relevant to lens regeneration. There have been no reports on the fine structure of the iris muscle of the Japanese common newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster and no histochemical works on amphibian iridial muscles and nerves. Thus, in the present study, detailed investigations on the fine structure of the iris muscle and some histo- chemical studies on the iridial muscles and associ- ated nerves were made in the adult Cynops pyrrhogaster. In addition, the present study also seeks to obtain basic information on the iris muscle, which presumably has some relevance to lens regeneration.

Sesame and rice bran oil lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? People who cooked with a blend of sesame and rice bran oils saw a significant drop in blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association's High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions.

The researchers found cooking with a combination of these oils in a variety of ways worked nearly as well as a commonly prescribed high blood pressure medication, and that the use of the oil blend with medication yielded even more impressive results.

"Rice bran oil, like sesame oil, is low in saturated fat and appears to improve a patient's cholesterol profile," said Devarajan Sankar, M.D, Ph.D., a research scientist in the Department of Cardiovascular Disease at Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital in Chikushino, Japan. "Additionally, it may reduce heart disease risk in other ways, including being a substitute for less healthy oils and fats in the diet."

The 60-day study in New Delhi, India, divided 300 people with mild to moderately high blood pressure into three groups. One group was treated with a commonly used blood pressure lowering medication called a calcium-channel blocker (nifedipine). The second group was given the oil blend and told to use about an ounce each day in their meals.

The final group received the calcium channel blocker and the oil blend.

All three groups, with approximately an equal number of men and women, average age of 57, saw drops in their systolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure is the top number in a blood pressure reading and measures the force of blood against your artery walls when the heart is pumping.

Systolic blood pressure dropped an average of 14 points for those using only the oil blend and 16 points for those taking medication. Those using both saw a 36-point drop.

Diastolic blood pressure also dropped significantly: 11 points for those eating the oil, 12 for those on medication and 24 for those using both. Diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number in a blood pressure reading that measures the force of blood against your artery walls when your heart is at rest between beats.

As for cholesterol, those using the oils saw a 26 percent drop in their LDL ("bad" cholesterol) and a 9.5 percent increase in the HDL ("good" cholesterol), while no changes in cholesterol were observed for the patients who used only the calcium-channel blocker. Those who took the calcium channel blocker and the oils had a 27 percent drop in LDL levels and a 10.9 percent increase in the HDL.

Healthier fatty acids and antioxidants, such as sesamin, sesamol, sesamolin and oryzanol, in the oil blends may be responsible for the results, Sankar said. These antioxidants, mono and poly unsaturated oils are compounds found in plants and have been linked with lower blood pressure and total cholesterol in earlier studies.

Additional studies are needed to determine if the oil blend is as beneficial as it seems. The combination was made specifically for this study, and there are no plans to market it commercially, Sankar said. Blending these oils yourself would not necessarily produce these effects.

People with high blood pressure should not stop taking their medications and should speak with their doctors before trying any product that might change their blood pressure to ensure they're being properly monitored.
