The beauty of the accused unfairly affects perceptions of their culpability

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

A study from the University of Granada based on police surveys indicates that in domestic violence crimes in which the woman kills her abuser, if she is more attractive she is perceived as guiltier.

From a social psychology point of view, it has been noticed that physical attractiveness has an influence on how people are perceived by others in labour, academic and even legal fields. On the one hand, this creates the mental association of "what is beautiful is good". On the other hand though, when it comes to domestic violence the results are different.

"One of the most interesting conclusions of the study was that when the woman accused of killing her abuser was attractive, participants attached greater culpability, whereas if considered 'unattractive', this decreases," as explained to SINC by Antonio Herrera, Inmaculada Valor-Segura and Francisca Exp?sito, the authors of the study published in The European Journal of Psychology Applied to Legal Context.

For the purposes of the study, two types of 'mock' stories about legal proceedings were invented in which the defendant was a woman accused of killing her husband. Her defence was that she had suffered prolonged domestic violence and thus acted in self-defence when killing him. In one of the stories the description of the woman coincided with the prototypical battered woman but in the other it did not.

"Therefore, half of the participating police officers read the story in which the accused is young, battered, physically deteriorated and fragile. She has children and is financially dependent on her partner. The other half read a story in which the woman is childless, she works as a financial consultant, she has been married for 10 years and during legal proceedings she is well-dressed and resolute and calm in her interactions with the judge and lawyers," explain the authors.

The researchers asked the participants to take on the role of the jury and answer a series of questions related to their perceptions of credibility, responsibility and situation control generated by the descriptions of the women. They were also asked about their sexist ideology.

The prototype of the battered woman

The authors outline that one of the variables having the greatest effect on the woman's perceived criminality rating is whether or not she fits the stereotype of the battered woman. This is named prototypicality.

"The results showed that when dealing with a non-prototypical battered woman (in other words, someone who does not conform to society's idea of such women), they were seen to have more control over the situation, which in legal terms can translate as a higher degree of guilt," confirm the researchers.

Another variable linked to the 'jury's' judgement on the case was the level of participant's sexism. In this respect, those who scored higher in their hostile rating (also called traditional sexism or machismo) attached more situational control to the accused.

"Despite its possible limitations, this study warns of the need to increase training related to the handling of domestic violence cases for all law enforcement officers and police. Their work is fundamental in the process and can be conditioned by external variables, such as physical attractiveness or stereotypical beliefs of domestic violence," conclude the authors.

The sample used in the study comprised 169 police officers from the Spanish State Security Forces. They were taken from different cities in Spain and the majority of participants were men (153 men and 16 women).

BPA May Worsen Women's Fertility Problems

Exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) may reduce fertility among women who already have fertility problems, a new study suggests.

The study involved women trying to conceive children through in vitro fertilization (IVF), a fertility treatment that includes taking hormones to stimulate egg production. These eggs are then collected, and researchers attempt to fertilize them in a laboratory.

In the study, doctors collected 24 percent fewer eggs from women with high levels of BPA in their bodies, compared with women who had low levels of the industrial chemical.

Women with high BPA levels also had fewer eggs that were successfully fertilized.

BPA is found in many products, including canned foods, plastics, dental sealants and credit card receipts. The chemical does not stay in the body for a long time, so a person's BPA levels can vary substantially depending on his or her exposure in a given day.

The new findings agree with animal studies suggesting that BPA exposure reduces fertility. For example, a study published last month found BPA exposure increased the risk of abnormal egg development in monkeys.

The new study found only an association, not a direct cause-effect link. In addition, the researchers did not look at how many women became pregnant, so they can't say whether BPA affects pregnancy rates, said Dr. Avner Hershlag, chief of the Center for Human Reproduction at North Shore University Hospital?in Manhasset, N.Y., who was not involved in the study.

However, if the results are confirmed by future research, doctors could one day measure BPA levels in women who fail to become pregnant through IVF, or who have low egg yields during the process, Hershlag said. Doctors could look at whether reducing BPA exposure in women with high levels makes a difference, he said.

In the new study, Dr. Russ Hauser, of Harvard School of Public Health, and colleagues analyzed information from 174 women who underwent IVF between 2004 and 2010. The researchers measured BPA levels in two urine samples from the women: one taken during hormone treatment and one taken two weeks later, on the day the eggs were collected. Nearly 90 percent of participants had BPA in their urine.

On average, about 12 eggs were collected from women with the lowest BPA levels, whereas nine eggs were collected from women with the highest BPA levels.

Upon trying to fertilize the eggs, the researchers found that women with high BPA levels had 27 percent fewer eggs that could be fertilized than women with low BPA levels.

It's not clear whether BPA might affect egg production in women in the general population ? it's possible that women undergoing IVF are particularly susceptible to the effects of the chemical, the researchers said.

Studies in which samples are collected every day of the IVF cycle could better determine the effects of BPA exposure, the researchers said.

The study was published online Sept. 26 in the journal Human Reproduction.

Pass it on: Exposure to BPA during IVF may reduce the number of eggs a woman produces that can be fertilized.

Trial of Pope's butler: Journalists admitted, but secret evidence not

Paolo Gabriele, the once-trusted valet who used to dress the 85-year-old German pontiff, is charged under Vatican law with the ?aggravated theft? of confidential papers.

By Nick Squires,?Correspondent / September 30, 2012

In this photo released by the Vatican paper L'Osservatore Romano, pope's butler Paolo Gabriele sits in the wood-trimmed courtroom of the Vatican tribunal, at the Vatican, Saturday. The Vatican opened the public trial Saturday of the pope's butler for allegedly stealing and leaking papal correspondence to a journalist, the most embarrassing scandal of Pope Benedict XVI's papacy.

The Pope?s personal butler will be cross-examined by a Vatican court on Tuesday in a closely-watched trial in which he is accused of stealing highly sensitive documents, some of them from the desk of Benedict XVI himself.

The trial opened on Saturday in a wood-paneled court room in a Vatican tribunal within the walls of the tiny city state.?The case inevitably has garnered headlines given that it revolves around the great mystery cliche: "Did the butler do it?" Or rather, "was it only the butler who did it?"

The documents at the heart of the case have lifted the lid on corruption at the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church, which is still battered by revelations of clerical cover-ups of child sexual abuse. With this case, the Vatican is trying to showcase greater transparency, allowing a pool of journalists to cover each meeting. Experts, however, say that the latest saga does not help the Vatican's already damaged image.

?It is certainly embarrassing for the Vatican but I?m not sure it will resonate that much among ordinary Catholics around the world,? says Alessandro Speciale, Vatican correspondent for Religion News Service.??The Church was already badly tarnished by the pedophile sex abuse scandals. That was much more serious.?

Paolo Gabriele, the once-trusted valet who used to dress the 85-year-old German pontiff and travel with him in his Popemobile, is charged under Vatican law with the ?aggravated theft? of confidential papers from the Pope?s private apartments and the Vatican secretariat of state.

Gold nugget, copy of the Aeneid

He is also accused of stealing an eclectic trio of gifts intended for the 85-year-old Benedict: a gold nugget, a check from a benefactor to the Pope for 100,000 euros, and a 16th century copy of the Aeneid, the epic poem by Virgil.

All the items were allegedly found squirreled away in the Vatican apartment he shares with his family, not far from the Pope?s apartments.

Mr. Gabriele, who is married with three children, is accused of passing the documents onto an Italian investigative journalist, Gianluigi Nuzzi, who in May published them in an explosive book, ?His Holiness ??The Secret Papers of Benedict XVI.?

The papers, memos, and letters lifted the lid on allegations of corruption in the awarding of public works contracts, obstructing the reform of the Vatican bank, and a mud-slinging campaign involving false accusations of homosexual affairs.

Several of the documents cast a bad light on Tarcisio Bertone, who as secretary of state is the Pope?s right-hand man and effectively the Vatican prime minister.?Documents appear to show that Cardinal Bertone did his utmost to block efforts to clean up alleged corruption and cronyism within the city state.

Reformer removed?

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, a senior member of the Vatican administration, discovered that it was wasting millions of euros in overpaying for goods and services, for instance.

But Cardinal Bertone allegedly had him removed from his post three years before his term was up and sent to faraway Washington as the Pope?s nuncio, or ambassador.

How Thin is Too Thin? [No you can't tell a girl with an eating disorder ...

Looking them up and down, comparing their physiques to that of the people next to them, checking for a pinch of jiggle or an ounce of wiggle, trying to define ?perfect? ab definition and, always, measuring the breadth of their smile against the depth of their ability to deprive themselves in pursuit of an elusive goal (?we can?t tell you exactly what it is but we know it when we see it!?), I didn?t want to judge them. I tried not to. I really did. But then again that?s the whole point of a bodybuilding show.

This past weekend I was invited to watch a beautiful friend compete in the ?figure? division of a bodybuilding competition and document her journey for Shape. So I spent an evening with an?auditorium?full of people weighing and measuring the Grecian beauties on the stage as they stood under spotlights in tiny sparkling suits, posing and turning so we could see every angle, every cut, every hard-earned muscle. And hard-earned they are: my friend?s austere diet and intense workouts required an amazing amount of discipline and dedication. By this weekend she looked perfection, so much so that when she took second place my jaw literally dropped. I couldn?t see any difference between her and the winner. As I squinted to find whatever minor flaw the judges saw, all I could see were a row of some of the most beautiful creatures I?ve ever seen in my life. How do you judge between a Monet and a Picasso? (Scratch that, I?ve never liked Picasso and his weirdly angular boobs. How about a nice Renoir instead?).

While second place is amazing ? She qualified for nationals! Woot! ? I spent the rest of the night trying to puzzle out the deciding factor. My friend has a remarkably sane attitude about the whole process (she is probably one of the calmest, most grounded women I?ve ever met) but my demons came back faster than you can say??I miss my hip bones!?? which is exactly what I said to my photographer on the way out. Because how do you spend an evening comparing beautiful women to each other without eventually throwing yourself into the mix? It?s the main reason I stopped reading fashion blogs frankly.?After spending the last few years trying to learn to appreciate people ? myself, especially ? for things other than the shape and size of our mortal shell, I had really hoped I was past all that.

Then I got home and found one of the most poignant e-mails I?ve received in a long time. It was a wonderful wake-up call:

?Hi Charlotte! First off, I love your blog. I?ve enjoyed reading about your escapades and adventures. You?re one of the people who inspired me to start my own blog! I?m thankful for your honesty about tough topics. So I?m going to perhaps over-share a little, but I think you?ll understand :)

I?m recovering from an eating disorder. In my case, I was restricting my daily intake to roughly 800 calories per day. At the height (lowest point!?) of my madness, (which took me a year to build up to and lasted two months) I was Bodyrocking, and running 30+ minutes, 5-6 days a week. I was tired all the time; my skin, hair and nails were a mess.

Have you ever heard of this happening? I know there are tons of bloggers who are recovering, and that?s great that they were running marathons and had ?perfect? bodies by today?s standards. But what about me? I?m not fully recovered (yet!) I still have days when ED whispers in my ear that if I only had stuck to my rigid lifestyle a little longer, I could have gotten the body I wanted.

Am I an odd case? What did I do ?wrong???

It made me cry. First, I wanted to reach through the computer and hug her and exclaim ?Nothing! You did nothing ?wrong?!! You are amazing and beautiful and everything right!? (Okay, first I wanted to commend her on her writing skills. Seriously I grade 17-year-olds? writing for a living ? SAT essays, holla! ? and I couldn?t help but admire her complex sentence structure and appropriate punctuation. Obviously she?s smart beyond her years.) Obviously she?s smart in other ways too. I admire how she was able to see the wisdom in her doctor?s advice, be grateful for her parents? intervention and follow the prescribed rest. At 17, she?s smarter than I was at 30.

But none of that was what she asked me. She asked if she was an ?odd case? to which I have to answer with a resounding?no. I remember when I first started training and was introduced to the concept of using body fat percentage as a better measure of health than weight. As a girl who had been so obsessed with the number on the scale, this felt freeing. But only for a little bit. I remember a trainer telling me that if I could get under 16% body fat then I?d see visible abs for sure. Diligently I worked myself down and? no abs. ?Every woman is different,? he shrugged. ?Maybe you just need to lose a little more.? I lost a lot more. I made myself sick (more on that below). And I never, not once, had defined abs.

Here?s the thing, darling reader: Our society is warped. Twisted. A veritable fun-house of fat and thin mirrors when it comes to body image. One on hand we have Kim Kardashian, queen of curves, compelled to exclaim in an interview, ?I look a lot bigger on TV. When I meet people, the first thing they say is, ?Wow, you?re so much smaller than I thought?. I look about 15 lbs heavier. I?m only 115 lbs, and everyone thinks I?m like 130 or 140. It?s bizarre. I?m a US size 2!?

On the other hand we have Kai Hibbard, a finalist on Season 3 of The Biggest Loser, interviewing about how the show gave her an eating disorder to the point where she was eating 1,000 calories while working out 5-8 hours a day. Says Kai about the consequences of her experience, ?It gave me a really fun eating disorder that I battle every day, and it also messed up my mental body image because the lighter I got during that T.V. show, the more I hated my body. And I tell you what, at 144 and at 262 and at 280, I had never hated my body before that show.?

Kim Kardashian and Kai Hibbard, I am not (and not just because my name doesn?t start with K) but I really sympathize with their feelings about being on TV and dealing with the resultant body image woes.

I?ve gotten a lot of interesting feedback from my 20/20 piece a few years ago but one of the most common comments I?ve got is some incarnation of ?But you never looked that skinny.? The implication of course is that I wasn?t skinny enough to have an eating disorder. I first encountered this during my pre-interview process with Fox News. The producer kept asking me for my ?skinniest skinniest pics, the ones that show the most bones.? I knew what they wanted. They wanted to see a 64-lb walking skeleton with a nasogastric tube and furry arms. Because that?s good television. From the very beginning I told them I never got that thin but sent them some pictures from that time period. They weren?t satisfied and kept phoning, texting and e-mailing me for better pics all the way until I?d boarded my airplane. If I were more technically savvy it would have driven me to Photoshop, I swear.

The Skinny Pics Debacle Take 2 happened after the 20/20 interview taped, but before it aired. The producer for the segment e-mailed me many times asking for better shots with the implication being skinnier shots. But it wasn?t limited to just TV people with their characteristic penchant for extremism. My own family joined the chorus. In an e-mail to my uncle about the piece, my father wrote, ? I saw her frequently through the whole time period in question and yes, she was slim, but she was healthy, energetic, and happy (as far as I could see), and so I was never worried. I admit freely that she cares about food in ways I don?t, but hey, different strokes for different folks.?

I love my dad dearly and consider him a great friend as well as a great father but his seeming dismissal of my illness stung. Friends and acquaintances jumped on the bandwagon as well ? some by comparing me to the super-skinny Johnny of the 20/20 piece and others by comparing me to popular TV or movie stars. ?Well, you were thin but not like Angelina Jolie thin. And she doesn?t have an eating disorder.? To my crazy mind all of these comments came out sounding like ?You weren?t thin enough as a normal girl and you certainly weren?t skinny enough as an anorexic/orthorexic. Even when you?re bad you?re not good enough!? How sick would I have to get before people thought I was actually sick?

At the time I had a BMI well under 18.5 which is considered unhealthy according to the standards set by the World Health Organization. But in a world where Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham subsist at about a 16, I did look kind of porky. And it wasn?t just low weight. I lose my period when my BMI dips below 19 ? a fact I?ve discovered on several occasions in my post-pubescent life. Amenorrhea is indicative of such poor nutrition that the body feels like it cannot support a baby. I had low iron, whacked-out electrolytes, vitamin deficiencies, a suppressed thyroid (which made me gain ten pounds despite exercising like a fiend), heart arrhythmias, hair loss and stress fractures in my shins that, like you, took me off all exercise for two months. But worst of all was the mental damage. I was depressed, neurotic and withdrawn.

It?s true that I didn?t break any bones, lose teeth or end up in the hospital with a tube up my nose ? a fact for which I am deeply grateful. But I did hurt. It?s just most of the hurt was emotional. And that?s the wound I?m still working on healing.

One of things I love most about this Reader?s e-mail is how she points out how easy it is to fall into this trap. We think if we?re not exercising six hours a day then we don?t have a problem. We think if we?re not super skinny then we can?t have an eating disorder. But a?lot of women with eating disorders look ?normal? to us because?we are conditioned to appreciate only extremely thin women.

My point in this whole sad story, dear reader, is to help you see that nothing good comes of comparing yourself to others ? to ?bloggers with perfect bodies who run marathons?, to movie stars, to friends who compete in bodybuilding shows.?I can honestly tell you that all you would have gotten from sticking to your ?rigid lifestyle a little longer? was sicker. Even if you did somehow magically end up with the body you always wanted, I can guarantee you that you wouldn?t have been able to see it. One of the worst parts of an eating disorder is that no matter how closely you approximate the fickle standards of catwalk beauty, you will never feel beautiful. You will never win that game. And you have everything to lose from playing. You didn?t send a picture with your e-mail (and I?m not asking for one!) but I?m willing to bet that you already have a perfectly beautiful body. Don?t waste two decades of your life like I did trying to fix something that doesn?t need fixing.

I?m posting your letter here because I have an amazing group of readers and I want you to hear this not just from me but from a chorus of strong, beautiful women and men telling you that you are one of us. Already. Just the way you are. (And I?m also posting this here because I can guarantee that you are not the only girl thinking this today ? you?re just the only one brave enough to write it:))

Love, love, love,

Charlotte

Your turn: I?m calling on all of you sweet, smart readers now ? how would you answer this letter? What would tell this girl (or your own 17-year-old self)??

*Note: I just realized that by including my bodybuilding friend in a post about eating disorders, some may assume that I think she has one too. I totally don?t! Like I said, she is wonderfully sane. I only included that anecdote to show you how easily?my?thoughts still go to disordered. This is not meant as a commentary on her or on bodybuilding in general.?

Support groups bolster cancer patients through ordeals

By PAMELA GLINSKI | Highlands Today correspondent

When a group of breast cancer survivors came together in a second-story conference room at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center to share feelings of accomplishments, limitations, hopes and fears, they found they had common concerns. In an outpouring of tears and laughter the women shared their very personal stories.

The support group meets the first Tuesday of the month, said Florida Hospital's Breast Patient Navigator Laurie Jones, who leads the group. In her position, Jones works with a board of surgeons, pathologist, radiologist, and primary-care physicians to advise patients on their care and coordinate the services they need.

Seventeen years ago, Jones lost her sister to breast cancer after a decade long battle with the disease. "That is why I got into nursing," she said.

Support groups are not therapy. People meet to learn coping skills, reduce anxiety, provide each other with emotional support and improve the quality of their lives. Groups can be led by a group member, a survivor, a nurse, or a trained professional.

"We belong to a sorority that none of us wanted to join," said Florida Hospital's Marketing Director Cathy Albritton, who had a lumpectomy four years ago. After she was diagnosed, several people in Highlands County reached out to her. She said, "We all became a support group, friends and associates."

A strong advocate for being well-informed and having regular screenings, Albritton said from now through December, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, Seascape Imaging, and the Florida Hospital Breast Care Center will be offering reduced price $99 digital screening mammograms. For information or to schedule a mammogram, call 402-3627. Women under 40 years of age will need a doctor's prescription.

"The most important thing is to get a mammogram. It is worth the two minutes of discomfort," said Corrine Volpe, a former Palm Beach County hospice social worker who had a double mastectomy in November 2010. She said, "I didn't think I needed (a mammogram) because no one in my family had ever had cancer. I had stage-three cancer by the time it was detected."

Now in her 50s and unable to work, Volpe moved to Highlands County this past year. She suffers with pain, the constant swelling of lymphedema and feels tired. "I deal with the constant fear every day that it is coming back."

"I've had so many surgeries: stage-four in my colon, my breast, lungs, and lymph nodes," said Bonnie Murphy, a former JC Penney customer service representative. Remarkably upbeat and healthy looking, she said her cancer was discovered after a routine insurance physical.

With cancer in one breast, she elected to have both removed. As the colon cancer spread to her lungs, she began having other health problems. In March, she had 90 screws put in her body after chemotherapy weakened her muscles, leaving her with a hernia. "I told the doctor I guess now I'm a screw up," she joked to lighten the situation.

The support of family, church, friends and the people at Florida Hospital's breast cancer support group "made a world of difference," said Murphy. She said, "Never give up, believe in yourself."

"The greatest weapon in the fight again breast cancer is you," said Carol Byrum, an endoscopy technician at the hospital who had her lumpectomy 14 months ago after being diagnosed with a triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma.

"If people could just realize how important it is to talk about it," said Byrum, who still fights the fear that the disease will return. When 12 of her co-workers shaved their heads and 33 showed up to bolster her spirits at a dinner at Don Jose, she felt overwhelmed by their show of support.

Albritton said that an online support group that was very helpful for her was through the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. Visit MyNBCF at www.community.NationalBreastCancer.org.

The American Cancer Society offers free support services, information, and a support group locator at www.cancer.org/Treatment/SupportProgramsServices. You can also call its 24-hour help line at (800) 227-2345.

The First Baptist Church in Sebring also hosts a breast cancer survivor group every Monday evening, except holidays, at 6:30 p.m. Contact Dolores Champion at 386-2942 for more information.

The Breast Cancer Awareness support group at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, located at 4200 Sun 'n Lake Blvd., Sebring, meets the first Tuesday of the month in Conference Room 2 at 5 p.m.
