Any troglodytes out there who didn't know that AMD's next APU architecture is inbound? If so, we're gonna toast marshmallows outside your cave and give you a little pre-brief: Trinity will be a range of processors for "performance" notebooks and desktop PCs, which will continue in AMD's Fusion tradition of providing both the CPU and discrete-class graphics in a single-chip, power-efficient design. A potential rival to Ivy Bridge and the coming stampede of Ultrabooks? Yes indeed, although it's too early to say how closely matched these athletes will be, despite some early indications of 4GHz+ clock speeds. Judging from our recent look at a Trinity-packing Compal laptop, undercutting Ultrabooks on price will also be part of AMD's strategy -- along with throwing out Brazos 2.0 APUs to mop up the extreme low-power category. After all, Ivy Bridge probably won't offer truly discrete-class graphics until it's paired with an add-on GPU, which will inevitably bump up its price for gamers and multimedia types. If Trinity serves up great visuals and next-gen performance all in one go, AMD's accountants might be able to leave their subterranean hideouts too.

Nursing director thinks she was target of shooter

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? An administrator at a small Christian university where seven people were killed this week said Wednesday she was the alleged gunman's primary intended target after she rejected his repeated requests for a refund of his tuition.

Ellen Cervellon, director of the nursing program at Oikos University, said she wasn't on campus Monday when her former student, One Goh, came looking for her then went on his rampage.

Two days later, in an interview with The Associated Press, a shaken Cervellon said the slayings are haunting her.

"I have that weight on my shoulders and I don't know what to do with it," she said, her voice quavering. "Every single one of those students were going to be an excellent, excellent nurse. They're in my heart, and they always will be."

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan confirmed Cervellon was the apparent target. Officer Johnna Watson, a police spokeswoman, said later that police are looking into the possibility that other administrators had been targeted.

Goh, 43, was charged Wednesday with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, plus a special circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders that could make him eligible for the death penalty.

Shackled and showing little emotion, Goh said nothing during a brief court appearance other than a soft "yes" when the judge asked if he understood the charges. He did not enter a plea.

In a police affidavit, Officer Robert Trevino said Goh acknowledged going to Oikos on Monday with a .45-caliber handgun and four magazines of ammunition.

"He admitted to kidnapping a woman and forcing her from her office into a classroom at gunpoint," Trevino said in the statement. "He admitted to shooting and killing several people inside the classroom, before taking one of the victim's car keys and fleeing the scene in the victim's car."

Police arrested Goh about an hour after the shooting spree at a supermarket a few miles from campus.

A student wounded in the rampage said Goh burst into the classroom shouting and quickly began firing his weapon. Ahmad Sayeed was shot through the shoulder as he scrambled to get out with other panicked students.

The 36-year-old immigrant nursing student from Afghanistan said he did not understand what Goh was yelling, though he did hear him order students to line up in front of the classroom.

Sayeed said he has been this frightened once before ? when the Taliban attacked his high school in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

"The exact thing happened at my school," Sayeed said. "The Taliban came in and killed five students. I was very afraid then, too."

Cervellon said Goh dropped out of the nursing program at the tiny private school around November but returned numerous times to ask her for a full tuition refund.

Goh got angry when she told him the school could not refund all his money because he had been enrolled for nearly half of the program, she said. Cervellon said she did not know how much Goh had paid in tuition.

Police have said Goh was seeking a female administrator when he went to the campus Monday. When he was told she wasn't there, they said, he began shooting in classrooms, killing six students and a receptionist and wounding three others.

Jordan previously said Goh was angry after being expelled from the school, but Cervellon said he was never expelled and decided to leave on his own.

"He was never forced out, he showed no behavioral problems, and he was never asked to leave the program," she said. "He decided on his own to leave the program."

Police said they made contact with Cervellon after seeing the AP story. Jordan said investigators plan to interview her soon, and that many details were still unclear.

"We were told by witnesses that he was kicked out, but there could be some facts that he wasn't," Jordan said. "I do know that he was trying to get his down payment or tuition reimbursed."

During previous meetings with Cervellon, Goh also said he felt his classmates were picking on him at the school, which was founded to help Korean immigrants adjust to life in America and launch new careers, she said. Goh is a native of South Korean who became a U.S. citizen.

Jordan has said Goh also was upset because other students had teased him about his poor English skills.

However, Cervellon and nursing professor Romie John Delariman said they never heard about or witnessed Goh being ridiculed for problems with English. Delariman said Goh was a good student who didn't seem to struggle with his second language.

"He was a full-time student and was really motivated. If I taught something he would be the first person in line to do it," Delariman said.

Still, Goh appeared to be the aggressor in exchanges with others at the school, according to Efanye Chibuko, whose wife Doris Chibuko was among those killed in Monday's attack.

Chibuko said his wife, a native of Nigeria who was elected president of her nursing class, felt Goh was unstable.

"My wife was afraid of him," he told the AP. "She was afraid he would do something like he did. She knew the other victims, and they talked about it. They were afraid that he was going to come back and do what he did."

Chibuko said he's angry with school officials for not doing more to protect the students.

"They were all living in fear. My wife told me the guy had been violent toward the school staff and had kicked the walls and stuff like that," he said. "So they knew. They should have had security in place."

Delariman said he noticed that Goh had problems, in particular, dealing with women in his predominantly female nursing classes.

"He can't stand women," Delariman said. "He said he never used to work with women, or deal with women in a work setting or a school setting."

It's unclear how Goh earned a living before he became a nursing student at the school of about 100 students. His instructors and a former employer said he previously worked in construction.

Chong Sik Hwang, owner of C.H. Trading Co. in San Mateo, said he hired Goh as a deliveryman at the Asian grocery importing and distribution operation in 2009. Goh was fired a few months later after Hwang heard Goh had gotten into an argument with a customer.

After making an initial impression as "upbeat," Hwang said Goh turned out to be a "very stubborn" worker who didn't take direction well.

"He had to do it his way," Hwang said. "He was always right."

During the job interview, Hwang said Goh told him he had left a wife and 12-year-old daughter in Virginia. Goh was evicted from an apartment in Gloucester County, Va., in 2009 and left a string of debts behind, including back taxes owed to the federal government.

Hwang said Goh told him he ran a construction company on the East Coast but that the business had gone under.

Online records in two Virginia localities where he lived show that, while Goh was there, he racked up tens of thousands of dollars in liens and judgments, including a $10,377 debt to SunTrust Bank in 2006.

Matthew Dowd: What the Masters Flap Can Teach Us About Politics

Nearly every morning I try to wake up, be grateful for a new day, put my feet on the floor slowly, have a cup of tea, be as Zen as possible, and ease into the day as best as I can. As I say, "feet floor, tea, door!" Today in New York City, that process got disrupted in the restaurant of the hotel where I am staying. Big time. And it was all over the definition of sexism -- a topic that has been in the news and will unfold a good bit more in politics over the coming months.

First, a little background on my upbringing. I was raised by a very strong and independent mom. She was top of her class in high school in Detroit and at the Jesuit University of Detroit. She read voraciously, loved debate, and was smart as a whip. She began her career as a public school teacher in the Motor City, then had her first of 11 children. After that, the trajectory of her life changed dramatically, as well as the perception of her by many people she encountered. She would go to the grocery store with many of us, we would haul around two huge, fully-loaded carts, and you could see the dirty looks she was given for having so many children. You would hear the not-so-subtle remarks about her being ignorant or uneducated or even dumb because of all the kids, and of course because she wasn't dressed to the nines. It taught me a lot about not assuming you know someone's story by what you see or by your own prejudices.

I think women should be treated completely as equals, that they can do most everything as well as a man, and that this country would probably be a lot better off if a woman was president, or running most of the corporations in America. But I also believe in opening a door for a woman, helping a woman with her bag on the plane, standing up when she comes to the table, and if she is being accosted on the street, stepping in to help.

So as I walked into the caf? with a baseball cap on (I am follically challenged) to grab a piece of toast and tea, I overheard an older man in a golf shirt talking about the Masters controversy. This is the ridiculous situation in which the golf club refuses to admit any woman as a member -- including the current head of IBM (Ginni Rometty), whose company is sponsoring the tournament. Every other head of IBM has gotten a green jacket when it has sponsored, but not Rometty.

So this blowhard in the restaurant was spouting off to a buddy about how ridiculous it was for "women" (he was using this in a pejorative way) to force the Masters to do this. And then he said there was a controversy at his golf club because women wanted equal tee times to men on Saturday mornings, and his club "unfortunately" finally relented and let women get tee times even though "women" didn't work like men. I was just passively listening to this and trying to ignore it.

Then, as he was leaving, he walked up to me at my table and said, "You should take off your baseball cap because there was a woman in the restaurant." I answered, "Really?" And he said, "Really." I was blown away by the incredible irony and hypocrisy, and said, "Are those your rules?" He mumbled something, I called him a bore, and as I walked out into the hustle and bustle I was shaking my head.

I am quite sure women are faced with worse every day of their lives just as my Mom was -- whether they are full-time mothers, full-time workers, or a mix of both, as most are. It does raise a fundamental question about what it means to be a gentleman and which is more important -- the surface or appearances, or something deeper and more fundamental.

Yes, I think Ann Romney is a great surrogate for her husband on issues related to women, but don't we really want to know Mitt Romney's values related to women not only at home, but in the workplace? Don't we want to know if Romney thinks the CEO of IBM should be allowed in as a member at the Masters? (President Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, said on Friday that women should be permitted at the club.) Don't we want to know how Romney or Obama is going to create a better environment where women can have the choice -- to stay at home and raise a family and not worry about health insurance, or go to work full-time and not be judged on whether they are a good mom, or be given more flex time to do both?

I hope we can have this discussion without both sides in the debate devolving into slogans and talking points, with the Left accusing the Right of waging a war on women or the Right saying the Left is waging a war on family values. And maybe we can learn to treat each other as ladies and gentlemen -- but I still will probably wear my cap over my bald head at breakfast.

Challenges of Mixing A PR Career with a Toddler - The PR Toolkit ...

Working as a PR consultant to nonprofits and associations with a toddler around is definitely exciting. This is an age of exploration for a child and of course, Mommy's work is very interesting to a little one. The nature of working in the public relations field is that you?can end up taking calls from the press in the evenings or on the weekends, while surrounded by your family.

I work from home a few days a week, keep my business office in my home, and have a toddler. Like a lot of other working professionals, I juggle the demands of a home and family alongside my work.?Maintaining a professional PR consulting practice from home with a toddler around is challenging but not impossible. So here are a few of the?challenges parents might encounter when working in PR with a toddler around:

• Back twist-?Mommy throws?out her back climbing over the baby gate that blocks off?her desk in your home office so the toddler can't ransack it. Note to Mommy: get to the gym more often so you are more limber, or at least do a few stretches before climbing over the baby gate.
• Discombobulation?- the toddler helpfully unpacks Mommy's work bag or brief case in the hallway foyer and hides various items around the house. Mommy finds her laptop under the dining room table, her phone in between the couch cushions and the newspaper she was reading on the bus on the toy shelf. Note to Mommy: always put your bag on the high shelf or in the office in the future.?
• Smartphone exploration -?the toddler gets a hold of Mommy's?cell phone that, of course, Mommy?loaded her primary media contacts into (after all?Mommy was?trying to be efficient).?The toddler accidentally dials a reporter at USA Today. Thankfully, the reporter is not there, only gets subjected to a voicemail of?Mommy?discovering?the toddler holding the phone proudly and also has young children and understands. Note to Mommy: Never leave the phone where the toddler can get to it and use the lock.
• Smartphone destruction - having concluded that the SmartPhone is after all, a big distraction for Mommy's time and energy, the toddler disposes of it in the kitchen trash. Note to Mommy: never leave the phone where the toddler can get to it. Really. And the trash can should be the first place you check when your phone goes missing.
• Snotnose suit - the toddler does catch cold from time to time and has a runny nose. Unfortunately, Mommy's suit and clothes?bear?the brunt of it. Note to Mommy: buy those little Kleenex packets and keep them in your purse - they are a godsend for parents with toddlers. Carry your jacket outside to the car and don't wear it in the house. Don't get dressed in your nice clothes until you absolutely have to leave. And keep your makeup, lint brush?and hair brush in your purse (but keep the purse out of reach of the toddler) so you can freshen up after leaving the house.
• News clip?annihilation?- while technology has changed much of our business and reduced?the need to keep paper around, Mommy still keep news clips and newspapers for print stories that clients want to see. These?big newspaper sheets are?so much fun for a toddler to play?with and are great for playing?peek a?boo. Note to Mommy:?always keep the client news clips in?your desk area,?safely behind the baby gate. And give your toddler the pages you don't need for some fun.
  
• TV scribbles -?keeping up with the news?is an important part of media relations work and of course,?TV screens are fascinating to toddlers.?They also make great canvases for toddlers who like to color and use crayons - after all, they've just discovered that crayons can be used to draw on things, and aren't just for eating. Note to Mommy: You got lucky this time. Crayons are waxy and come off TV screens easily. Keep the crayons on a shelf and ration them out in the future.
• Sleep deprivation - toddler sleep patterns are unpredictable by nature and?toddlers typically want their mommies (and daddies) at night when they get scared, need a hug, a?glass of water, or anything else. It's inevitable that if Mommy is burning the midnight oil on a project and tiptoeing off to bed, that the toddler wakes up and wants a snuggle. Note to Mommy: That sleep training for toddlers that your mom told you about - might not be a bad idea, but don't forget that in a few years those snuggles won't be nearly as forthcoming. Sleep whenever you can - on the commuter bus, in a train, or?during a business trip (forget going out with the gang from the office?if you can grab some ZZZs).
• Bad mood-itis - sleep deprivation is unfortunately mood-altering. It can make Mommy grumpy. Note to Mommy: don't take sleep deprivation out on coworkers. Or clients. Or reporters. Try coffee, working out, positive thinking,?or chocolate to upgrade your attitude.
• Coffee dump - coffee becomes even more essential when you are not getting enough rest and trying to get a lot done. This works great until?the?toddler finds Mommy's coffee cup and helpfully empties in onto the floor, in Mommy's work bag, onto Mommy's note pad, or onto?Mommy's laptop. Note to Mommy: Never ever?abandon the coffee.
• Reporter interruptus- occasionally toddlers are loud. After all, there is a lot to explore in their world and they are excited about it. Their rambunctious behavior?doesn't always mesh well with an after hours call from a reporter who needs to confirm a last minute fact.?When the reporter calls while Mommy and the toddler are in the car and Mommy's phone routes through bluetooth onto the car stereo system (mommy was trying to be efficient when she set that up), the reporter also gets subjected to any noise made in the car - and can hear?the toddler - who is of course, not asleep and watching Mickey Mouse cartoons in the back seat. Note to Mommy:?When talking to a reporter after hours and a toddler is nearby, make sure reporter knows a. it is ok to call to check a fact, even after hours?and?b. Mommy has a toddler nearby who may erupt at any moment and is unpredictable. Having a?understanding?partner or spouse who can help corral/distract/carry off?the rambunctious little toddler if a longer conversation is?necessary can be a huge help.?

Living by Design or Default: Dating, Sexuality, and Relationships ...

Today we launch the Conscious Living Series composed of visually enjoyable, to the point, life-altering booklets. The first three booklets, Conscious Dating, Conscious Sexuality, Conscious Relationship ($6 each, $15 for all three) were inspired by my own experience of waking up and by hundreds of conversations and vulnerable experiences shared in women?s circles over the past 25 years. The stories that motivated me to complete the first three booklets express truths rarely acknowledged even in women?s groups.

Some of us don?t have the words to express our experiences. Others of us have been conditioned to accept the way things are without questioning. When we feel uncomfortable we are much more likely to conclude that something is wrong with us, and to either ignore our discomfort or pursue remedies for our perceived flaws.

I met Sally in the dorm at a retreat center. The conversation turned to sexuality. She shocked us by the following expression of her frustration: ?I?m 26 and I?ve already figured out that most men will do anything to be sure their sexual needs are met. The vagina is what they want. I?ve yet to experience a date where the man doesn?t at some point start the predictable moves toward ?getting some.? It?s frustrating.? As we shared with her, in a way she wished her mother had been able or willing to do, she was encouraged to remain loyal to herself, regardless, and said, ?Through this conversation, I now know that men do exist who?ve moved beyond the ?getting some? stage, and I?ll only date them.? She woke up to her own responsibility to know what she wants and to let go of what doesn?t work for her!

Forty-something Jennifer chimed in, ?As I look back I?m ashamed of how many times I faked orgasm with male partners. Most of them had no idea how to satisfy me, so I put up with them pushing me around like a piece of furniture to set up the perfect setting for their release. I never once told the truth. So they believed they were perfect lovers because I enabled them to think that.? Through our informal circle sharing, she too became aware of her responsibility to tell the truth about her experience and to make clear to partners which sexual style worked for her. She announced, ?No more fake orgasms!?

Fifty-something Celine shared her experience in a circle of women, ?I left a relationship because I finally realized that the man I was dating only wanted sex. He kept a lid on his frustration and anger when I asked to be held or told him that I was too tired for sex?until one day, when he could no longer hide his obsession. When I asked him for some affection, he became angry, jumped out of bed, and slammed the door on his way out. I was petrified. I broke up with him that week.? She was encourage by the honest sharing and now knows she?s not alone.

Married Celeste opened up about a situation faced by many women, yet rarely spoken aloud: ?My husband went into moods almost weekly. He became distant and irritable. This was very painful. I asked him if his moods were related to the frequency of our sexual intercourse. He told me that he expected regular sex from his partners. His expectation shut me down. We saw a counselor who challenged my husband to manage his own emotions and needs, and stop looking to me for release. When I read about the difference between process and destination oriented sexual styles, I felt encouraged. I?m not frigid. I?m not crazy. Now we must decide if the differences in our sexual styles mean the end of our marriage. Taking responsibility for what I want and need is serious business!?

Louis and Monica attended the ?Adam & Eve Make Peace? workshop for couples. They shared their inspiring experience as the reason they wanted to practice the ?Making Peace? Intimacy Practices offered in the workshop and in the Conscious Relationship booklet: ?How sad that the title Men are From Mars. Women are From Venus assumes that so much distance exists between men and women. We thought something was wrong with us because distance is not our experience. I emphasize it here in this blog because so little is written to support women, of whatever age or relationship-status, to sort through their sexual attitudes and responses. The resources contained within the booklets to evaluate dates, trust our own wisdom, reclaim our own sexuality, and co-create peace-full relationships are deeply life-affirming, positive, and wise.

The word conscious means: known to oneself, awake to one?s own existence, aware of what one is doing, and aware of one?s sensations, thoughts, reactions, and surroundings. The first three booklets invite you to live a conscious, mindful life in the area of relationships?pursuing them, evaluating them, and maintaining them. If we don?t consciously design our lives, by default we will automatically fall into the patterns and habits shaped by our socialization.

You could just use a plain old wooden stick to mix up your plaster if you are only going to use small amounts. However if you are plastering a whole room or ceiling then you will require large amounts of fresh plaster and mixing this with a wooden stick is just not a feasible option. The thing with plaster is that it does have a short working life span so the trick is to mix plaster in small quantities, but many times. Gov. Chafee Holds Finance Meeting | WPRI.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Governor Lincoln D. Chafee invited Rhode Island's municipal leaders to a summit at the State House in order to prevent another city or town from claiming bankruptcy.

During the closed-door meeting, local officials joined the Governor to discuss his proposed legislative package of relief and reform.

Through the proposal, the state's most cash-strapped cities and towns would have the opportunity to waive certain state mandates. In addition, struggling municipalities could suspend cost-of-living pension increases for retired municipal workers.

Governor Chafee hopes his plan will empower local officials to take the necessary steps to gain fiscal health for their respective communities.

Leaders in attendance agreed to help lobby members of the General Assembly on behalf of Governor Chafee's proposal.

IBM: 'We must build an Exascale computer before 2024' (video)

ASTRON has enlisted the help of IBM to lead a five-year, $43 million project to develop and build a supercomputer for the new Square Kilometer Array. The SKA is a $2.1 billion initiative to construct the world's largest radio telescope across a 3,000km strip of Australia or South Africa. It's hoped to be around 50 times as powerful as the dishes we currently point heavenward and will be used to examine the deepest reaches of space to learn more about the formation of the universe. When it goes live in 2024, it'll produce an Exabyte of data each day: twice as much information as there is traffic on the internet in the same period. Of course, no existing computer could handle the job, so Big Blue has a slim 12 years in which to turn nascent technologies like Nanophotonics, 3D chip stacking and phase change memory amongst others into a practical, workable Exascale computer. Its either that, or somehow daisy-chain 100 million PCs with enough power and cooling fans to keep it all working and hope for the best. If you'd like to know more, then head on past the break, although unfortunately it won't count as college credit.
